I am finding it difficult to get any idea on cost, so need to know whether it is worth investing in this type of heating method or to move to solar panels for hot water and a more efficient conventional boiler for heating instead. Reasonably large garden (around 28 metres long, although only 4m 20cm wide), but have also been looking at air heat pumps (perhaps to be installed in the attic?). The house is late Victorian mid-terrace, but with double glazing and well insulated loft space (which may be converted into a third bedroom with shower room in near future, which means the heating system needs to be flexible enough to have this added later). Walls are not insulated and, following latest advice for properties this age, will not be so as to avoid future problems with damp. Note also the house is built on a flood plain, in case this is an issue; however, flooding has to my knowledge rarely occurred here. There will be a wood burner in the main living room/diner as a main heat source in this room (which takes up most of the ground floor space), and possibly to assist in heating the rest of the house on chilly days and milder winter nights without the need to use underfloor heating (ie by leaving doors open to other rooms). Heated towel rails would need to be installed in the bathroom and planned shower room, so would need an idea whether to have these included as part of the heat pump system or separately via mains electricity (ie which would be more economic?). So far as underfloor heating is concerned, I am looking more at laying heat mats under floor coverings rather than water pipe sytems, as the latter will raise the floor levels throughout the house and generate far more refurbishment work than I've planned (and hence push up budgets). However, it is my understanding that mats can be used with heat pumps. ...
