When the ballcock valve in the header tank in my loft opens to let mains water top the level up, there is a resonance in the pipes as the valve starts to close that makes the house shake slightly (particularly the kitchen floor) and produces a noise like a trumbone. It lasts about 5 minutes until the valve in the loft shuts off. I can stop it once its started by closing and opening the mains stop cock in the kitchen. I was told it MAY be a faulty washer..could it be? Is the mains water pressure too high? I can temporarily stop it by reducing the pressure to the house by turning the mains stopcock down outside the house. But in a few months its back.
