Flagstone looks great in any garden

Whether you want to install a walkway, patio or cover you entire garden, flagstone is a great option; with its rustic charm and low maintenance, it is perfect for any garden.

What are the benefits of flagstone?

  • Many colours available

There are a wide range of flagstone colours available, from brown, red and beige right through to blue.

  • Lots of different patterns

There are many patterns to choose from meaning you get the look you want. Whether the flagstone is deliberately patterned with stones which match in dimension, or chilton steppers which is similar only the sizes can differ, or chaison which uses any shape or sized stone for a truly unique look, you are sure to find something suitable.

  • Easy to maintain

Maintaining a flagstone patio or walkway is a very simple task. If the flagstone patio is positioned near a tree it may suffer an influx of regular leaves, this along with other debris should be swept away regularly, otherwise you risk staining the surface of the flagstone. Dust and dirt will also be removed in the sweeping process, which if left could penetrate the flagstone. It should be noted that cleaning products which contain harsh chemicals shouldn’t be used very often as over time they will strip the flagstone of its natural colour. If you are particularly worried about your flagstone you could treat it with a sealant agent which should prolong the life of the flagstone whilst simultaneously protecting it from things like furniture scratches.

  • Nonslip surface

Due to its natural texture a flagstone patio will provide your garden with a nonslip surface. This is great for furniture especially if you are into outdoor entertaining or regularly eat al fresco! It is also a great benefit if you have children, who will inevitably run around in the garden, so anything nonslip is great. However certain weather conditions such as ice and rain will render it slippery, so bear this in mind.

  • Every stone is unique

As flagstone is a natural material it means that no two stones are alike; leaving you with a completely unique garden.

How do I lay flagstone?

Laying flagstone, especially large areas of it can be a very tricky task. It might be best to hire a professional to do the job for you, especially if you want a sleek and smooth finish. Due to its weight, certain protective gear must be worn to ensure safety - gloves, goggles and a back support would all be recommended. As flagstone is irregularly shaped and comes in many sizes laying it can be very confusing, trying to make it all fit together is like solving a very difficult puzzle! The more meaty stones should be placed logically for stability, for extra sturdiness you could lay the flagstones in a bed of concrete which will help to make them last even longer. Otherwise they can be laid straight onto sand with the joints filled in with mortar.

How much will flagstone cost?

It depends on the type of stone you go for but you can expect to pay around £30 per m2
