Designing and fitting your own wardrobe
Designing and fitting your own wardrobe can add something extra to your bedroom – find out more here.
Designing your own wardrobe can stamp an identity on the room, as you can purposely tailor it to your needs. Fitting your own wardrobe will allow you to make the best use of the space available and to create the image you want. When designing and fitting your wardrobe there are several things you need to consider:
Designing your own wardrobe
The right wardrobe design can transform
a bedroom
- Identify the main use of your wardrobe. Most wardrobes are used to store clothes in, but some can be designed with extra compartments to store other household objects. This is most useful in a home with limited storage space.
- How many people are using the wardrobe? If this is a wardrobe that will cater for more than one person, you need to consider the size of it when designing your own wardrobe. You could separate the wardrobe into different sections making it easier to distinguish between different people’s clothes and belongings.
- What type of doors do you want? There are a selection of doors available to you when designing your wardrobe. The main choice for most people are standard hinged doors; however, you may consider opting for sliding doors when designing your own wardrobe. Although they are more pricey than standard doors, sliding doors can help maximise the space in your wardrobe.
- What other things can I add to my wardrobe design? You may feel that once you have decided on the compartments and doors that your newly designed wardrobe will have, there is nothing else you can design. You might want to decide on the type of wood that you would like your wardrobe to be made out of. You can choose what type of handles will be on the doors of your wardrobe. It is also possible for you to choose the colour that your wardrobe is stained once it has been built.
Fitting your own wardrobe
- Get your dimensions correct. The most fundamental thing to consider when fitting your wardrobe is that you have your dimensions correct. Before fitting your wardrobe, you need to make sure that you have accounted for every inch of space. It can be annoying when you have fully designed and built you wardrobe, only to find that it now will not fit in the space you have marked out.
- Make sure you have help. Moving a wardrobe should always be done by more than one person. You would be surprised how heavy some wardrobes can be, especially when they have been custom made. Therefore having an extra pair of hands available when fitting your wardrobe is a good idea.
You should expect to pay close to £200 to £250 if you want a specifically designed wardrobe built for you. Although this may seem like a steep cost for what is essentially a piece of furniture, a well crafted and attractive looking wardrobe can really add something to your bedroom.
