Finding a qualified, insured and experienced tradesman is essential to guaranteeing that your home improvement project is a success. With so many tradesmen in operation, it can be difficult to separate the professionals from the cowboys. In fact, according to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), complaints about rogue traders topped 4,000 in the last year, an annual increase of 18%. The OFT warn that the most common home improvement scams include roofing, driveway laying and cavity wall insulation. Hiring a rogue trader not only results in sub-standard, even dangerous home improvement work, it also costs homeowners around £8 million per year, reports the OFT.
Trying to avoid rogue traders by taking on home improvement work yourself, unless you are completely competent, can also end in tears. The Focus DIY Tools of the Nation Survey found that 80% of those questioned had ended up having to pay at least £100 to have their DIY home improvement disasters put right by a professional. The startling findings showed that most respondents didn’t know which tools to use for home improvement work or didn’t have access to the right equipment – 84% admitted to using cutlery for home improvement tasks and 42% said they’d resorted to using their fingernails.
The perils of taking on DIY home improvement work don’t stop there; according to The Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents; around 220,000 people end up in hospital each year due to DIY related accidents. This includes falls from ladders and knife and saw related injuries.
