Wallpaper, colours and craft are interior design trends for 2010

Interior design for 2010 is all about new wallpaper, bold colours and craft items, says celebrity interior designer Linda Barker.

Speaking from the 2010 Ideal Home Show in Earls Court, the Changing Rooms and 60 Second Makeover presenter says: “At the moment there is a big crafting movement going on in the home. People are making things themselves like ornaments, decorations and tablecloths.”

According to Linda, knitting, crocheting and appliqué are the most popular interior design trends of 2010, partly because people have had less money to spend on elaborate interior design since the start of the recession. The Halifax Home Improvement survey finds that people have switched from more expensive improvements to simple ones like redecorating – 64% of those questioned chose to improve their homes with new paint or wallpaper last year.

Interior designer Marcia Morgan agrees with Linda: “All these old craft items are coming back into vogue now,” she says. Linda’s big interior design tip for 2010 however, is to put up some new wallpaper. “There are so many easy to put up designs on the market now, anybody can do it,” she explains.

The recession has also stopped people from moving home as frequently, so instead they are focusing less on decorating to please buyers and more to suit their personal tastes, claims Linda. “People are staying put more, but there is a silver lining - people are experimenting a lot more with colour and moving away from the neutral beige decor which has been popular for the past few years,” she says.
